As early as 1977, the United States was listed as number one in youth smoking by the Surgeon General of the United States of America. Among all the G8 countries, the United States is second only to Russia in its youth smoking rate. The United States youth smoking rate is highest among the G8 countries (United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and Russia), and in the twenty-five leading countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela). A recent United States Census Bureau report reveals that the United States ranks 8th in the world, and 1st in the United States, in youth tobacco use.
